Descartes called the pineal gland the seat of the soul in 1649. In 2002, researchers discovered calcite microcrystals inside it with piezoelectric properties — crystals that transduce electromagnetic fields into mechanical vibration. The 17th-century intuition and the 21st-century materials science point at the same organ.
Winfried Schumann predicted it in 1952. Herbert König measured it in 1954. The fundamental Schumann resonance at 7.83 Hz falls at the lower edge of the human alpha brain rhythm (8-12 Hz). König himself noted the overlap. The question of coincidence vs. calibration remains open.
Cryptochrome proteins enable birds to navigate by magnetic field, bees to orient their dances, sharks to detect prey. Humans carry the same proteins. Human cryptochrome has been shown to function as a magnetosensor in a model organism. Whether it functions in humans has barely been tested.
In 1962, Allan Frey demonstrated that pulsed microwave radiation produces audible clicks and buzzing inside the human skull — even in subjects who were deaf. The mechanism is thermoelastic expansion. The military was interested immediately. The public research trajectory went cold almost as fast.
